A rotary table is the rotating plate on the drill floor of the rig that turns the drill string clockwise. The rotary table that surrounds the four- or six-sided kelly bushing and kelly drive provides power to the drill string and bit from the drive system of the rig.
Since it connects the drill string to the rig's power source, the rotary table can be referred to as a clutch.Top drive systems that enable the continuous rotation of the drill string have replaced the rotary table, the kelly bushing, and the kelly drive in some rigs due to changes in trenchless construction requirements. However, the drill string is still primarily moved by a rotary table in the majority of rigs.
Typically, rotary drive tables are used in top-drive rigs, which have their drive motor at the top of the rig.The sections of the drill string are first joined to the bottom hole assembly.Beginning at the top, new sections of drill string are joined to sections in the bore and the top drive motor as they enter the bore to form the drill string.Sections of the drill string are screwed together clockwise. The drill string's segments are tightened clockwise on the rotary table.
